Where are parks needed most?

Trying to figure out where parks are needed most in your town? You probably have a lot of questions. Where are the areas that are not within a 10-minute walk of a park? Which areas have the highest number of children? Where are the highest concentrations of low-income people? These community members may be unable to pay for private recreational or fitness facilities, and they might have difficulty traveling long distances to parks due to lower access to vehicles.

Luckily, ParkServe® does the hard work for you! ParkServe® is a data platform created by The Trust for Public Land’s Research and Innovation Team that helps park professionals and advocates locate areas for new parks. ParkServe® makes it easy to see which neighborhoods in your community are located within a 10-minute walk of a park and which areas are not.

A map with colored overlay demonstrates areas with greater need of park access.

To get started:
  1. Visit the ParkServe website.
  2. Search for your city.
  3. Scroll down to “Where in (city name) are parks needed most?” and click on the city’s map.
  4. The red areas have the greatest need for new parks.
  5. The optimized points show the areas where a new park would serve the highest number of people.
